BARBOUR, Walter 'Colin'
Colin (as he preferred to be called) also had a unique story. Having watched four out of his seven older brothers enlist in WW1, he finally enlisted on the 24/10/1918. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your perspective) he was still in training when the Armistice was declared. His service to his country didn’t end there though, as he enlisted in WW2 and was taken as a POW at Changi. Although Colin survived the war he came home a changed man. William, his son, also enlisted in WW2, serving with No. 455 Squadron in the RAAF. He was killed in action during a flying battle over the Frisian Islands (6/7/1944). William was only 21 years old. Walter, being a POW at the time of his son’s death, would not have found out about his passing until after the conclusion of the war in 1945.
